Background
Not much is revealed about Caplin's past other than that he is married with 4 children.
Season One
Slaughterhouse
Tired of the monotonous life he had, one day, he woke up with the idea of ending it all. First he killed his wife while she was sleeping, then he killed his 9-year-old son and finally he had a fight against his 16-year-old son that ended with the death of the teen.
When the CSIs arrived to investigate the massacre and took him to the hospital, he lied, saying that he did not remember anything. When the evidence showed that he was the criminal, Horatio Caine went to his house and confronted him, and Caplin finally confessed, trying to justify having killed his own family.
